Keeping line breaks and spacing in captions
You write a caption with tidy paragraphs, publish it, and the gaps between them are gone. It happens most often on Instagram, and it's usually caused by what's on the "empty" lines, not by the line breaks themselves. This guide explains the cause, the fix our tool uses, and how to space a long caption so people actually read it.
Why spacing disappears
A blank line between paragraphs is just two line breaks in a row. When that blank line also holds spaces, or a line ends with a trailing space, Instagram may collapse the gap when it saves the caption. Copying text from notes apps and editors often adds those invisible spaces without you noticing. Instagram doesn't document this behaviour, and it changes from time to time, so the safest fix is one that doesn't rely on blank lines staying blank.
The fix: a line that only looks empty
The line-break tool removes stray spaces at the ends of lines and puts a single invisible character on every empty line: the braille pattern blank, Unicode U+2800. It's a real, printable character that happens to show no dots, so the line isn't empty and isn't squeezed out. You'll see guides recommending other invisible characters; we use this one because it has held up in normal use.
Accessibility trade-off
Screen readers may announce the braille blank, for example as "blank". If many of your followers use one, choose a visible dot or a dash on the empty lines instead.
A layout that helps people read
Only the first line or two show before "more", so the first line has to give a reason to tap. After that, spacing is about scanning, not decoration.
- One idea per short paragraph, with a blank line between paragraphs.
- Lists as separate lines starting with a dash or an emoji, not one long sentence.
- Hashtags at the very end, after their own blank line, so they don't interrupt the text.
- Check the post once after publishing: platforms change how they handle text.
Works beyond Instagram
The same text should keep its spacing in Instagram bios and comments, and on Threads; check once after posting. Every character still counts toward the limit, so a caption near Instagram's 2,200 maximum has a little less room once the blank lines are filled.
Paste your caption, keep its empty lines, and copy a version that survives posting.
