Module 1: Thumbnails and imagesLesson 3 of 113 min read

Profile pictures that stay sharp from 800 pixels down to a tiny circle

Your profile picture appears next to every video, comment and post, usually as a small circle. Platforms ask for a square file and do the cropping and shrinking themselves. Most blurry or awkward avatars come from three mistakes: a file that's too small, a subject too close to the corners, and details too fine for the size people actually see.

Square in, circle out

Almost every platform takes a square image and shows it as a circle. Everything in the four corners disappears. A face or logo needs to sit in the middle with a little space around it, so the circle doesn't clip ears, hair or the edge of a wordmark.

Which size to upload

YouTube shows a profile picture at 98×98 pixels and accepts JPG, PNG, BMP or a still GIF up to 15 MB. It doesn't publish an upload size; an 800×800 square is a safe choice. Starting large matters because high-density phone screens use two or three device pixels per displayed pixel, and because each platform shrinks the file with its own settings. A big, clean original survives that; a small one gets enlarged and goes soft.

An 800×800 export works almost everywhere. Use 400×400 for a smaller file, or a larger square when a platform asks for it.

Don't upscale

Enlarging a 200-pixel image to 800 doesn't add detail. If your only copy is small, crop tighter around the face instead of enlarging the whole picture.

Design for comment size

The real test is the smallest version: the picture next to a comment or in a list of subscriptions, only a few dozen pixels across. At that size, text inside the avatar is unreadable and thin lines vanish. What still works is a face filling most of the circle, a simple logo mark without words, and a strong contrast between subject and background.

  • Fill about two thirds of the circle with the face or mark.
  • Use a plain or softly blurred background.
  • Keep the same picture across platforms so people recognise you.

Place your photo in the circle, check it at real sizes, and export a clean square.

Quick check

Three questions. Pick an answer to see why.

  1. What shape do most platforms show profile pictures in?

    Show the answer

Answer: A circle cut from a square upload Anything in the corners of the square is hidden.

  2. At what size does YouTube display a profile picture?

    Show the answer

Answer: About 98×98 pixels That's why a large, simple square upload stays sharp.

  3. Why avoid small text inside an avatar?

    Show the answer

Answer: At comment size the picture is only a few dozen pixels wide Text becomes unreadable long before that size.

Rules change

Platform rules change often. Each guide shows the date it was last checked; when in doubt, the platform's own help page has the final word.
