Video tags: what they still do and how to read a competitor's
Tags are keywords you add to a video in YouTube Studio. Viewers don't see them on the watch page, which gave them a reputation as a secret ranking lever. YouTube's own help page says otherwise. This guide explains what tags do today, how to look at the tags of videos you admire, and how to use what you find without breaking the rules.
What YouTube says about tags
YouTube describes tags as descriptive keywords that can help people find your video, and states plainly that they play a minimal role in discovery. They're most useful when the topic is often misspelled. The title, thumbnail and description carry far more weight, both for search and for the person deciding whether to click.
All tags share one 500-character limit, and the commas between tags count. A tag that contains a space counts two extra characters.
Reading another video's tags
Tags aren't shown on the page, but they're part of the public data YouTube shares with apps, which is how a tag extractor can list them. Looking at the tags of a few well-performing videos on your topic shows how those creators describe it: the names they use, spelling variants, and the language mix.
- Look for patterns across several videos, not the tags of a single one.
- Note spelling variants and alternative names people search for.
- Compare tags with the title and description; they usually repeat the same few terms.
What not to copy
Don't paste another channel's name, or popular terms that don't describe your video, into your own tags. YouTube's policies treat misleading metadata as spam, and it can lead to the video being removed. Many successful videos have few or no tags at all, which is a good reminder of how small their role is.
Better places to spend the time
A clearer title, a thumbnail that reads at small sizes and a description whose first lines explain the video do more than any tag list.
Paste a public video link to see its tags, category and description.
